Our Heritage Collection is handcrafted at our original factory in Adamstown, PA, where our hats were made when the company began in 1895.  Founded in 1868, they are America’s oldest hat maker. Their long and proud heritage carries on today as a testimony to the vision, perseverance, and hard work of generations.  Located in Adamstown, Pennsylvania, they manufactures wool felt, fur  felt, and straw hats. More importantly, they are an employee-owned company, where employees have an invested interest and own a percentage of the factory.  There are 3rd and 4th generation employees whose parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles have worked their entire lives at the hat factory.

Our relationship with our friends in New Zealand is extremely collaborative. Their passion for perfection creates a production standard where classics can only be hand crafted with such antiquated machinery and blocks. Machinery found at Hills Hats crosses into the footwear industry and is from an era when goods were built to last. On any given day at their factory you can spot naked gas flames and the sound of steam, harkening back to turn of the century hat making.

New Zealand is a world leader in Health and Safety which continuously advances the workplace standards, which Hills Hats embraces. The staff at this hat maker is all hands-on deck – being a part of discussions around quality, media, and adventure.

Our American Made straws are made by a fourth-generation family owned business that was started in 1919 by Master Hatter, Jacob Korber.  The factory specializes in all types of straws and felt headwear both for men and ladies. They are known in the hat world for their craftsmanship and quality of their Panama straw hats. As one of the last standing hat factories in the US we have partnered with this factory to hand-block the finest American Made and Panama straw hats. For our Panama Collection, we work with Ecuadorian businesses to hand weave toquilla straw for our hats. From there, we ship the straw to our American Made Straw factory, which uses the best technology with old world  techniques to hand-block and give each hat the perfect finish.

The roots of this multi-generational family business trace back to the 1700’s as America prepared to secure its freedom in the Revolutionary War. The builders of this factory were pioneers in harnessing steam power for wool felt hat making. The factory was built on the shoulders of hard work and fine craftsmanship – which is why we make our authentic American blocked felts in westerns, fedoras and rugged outdoor styles.
