The origin of waxed cotton goes back to Scottish mills in the 1800s. These mills wove flax sails for the British clipper fleet and used linseed oil from flax plants to waterproof both the sails and their clothing. A new process was put in place in 1930, coating cotton cloth with paraffin or bee’s wax. This highly water-resistant cloth quickly became the standard fabric for rainwear and waxed canvas hats. Waxed cotton is created by weaving 2-ply cotton yarn into a strong canvas fabric that is then treated with oil and wax to create a highly water and wind resistant barrier, while maintaining the breathability and comfort known to cotton. Our waxed cotton canvas hats are perfect for every adventure.
Where It’s Made
Goorin Bros. has been proudly producing hats in Newark, NJ since the 1950’s and is currently one of the very last cut and sew factories remaining in America. Predominantly known for its production of high-quality cut & sew hats, our factory continues to experiment with expanding our range of cut & sew goods, as well as perfecting alternative methods of production, including the blocking of fine felts and straws, trims and embroidery. Our “laboratory” is located within the neighborhoods of the historic Ironbound district; built New Jersey tough.
