A cord, traditionally leather, that wraps half way around the hat and through the brim ending under the chin. This secures the hat tight during activity and high wind or can allow it to drape resting on one’s back when not being worn on the head.
The origin of waxed cotton goes back to Scottish mills in the 1800s. These mills wove flax sails for the British clipper fleet and used linseed oil from flax plants to waterproof both the sails and their clothing. A new process was put in place in 1930, coating cotton cloth with paraffin or bee’s wax. This highly water-resistant cloth quickly became the standard fabric for rainwear and waxed canvas hats. Waxed cotton is created by weaving 2-ply cotton yarn into a strong canvas fabric that is then treated with oil and wax to create a highly water and wind resistant barrier, while maintaining the breathability and comfort known to cotton. Our waxed cotton canvas hats are perfect for every adventure.
